Positive Reinforcement
Adding something the animal finds desirable (a treat, praise, play) immediately after a behavior to make that behavior more likely to happen again. It is the primary driver of reward-based training.
Negative Reinforcement
Removing something the animal finds aversive when the desired behavior occurs, which also increases that behavior. This is distinct from punishment; it is often misused and can generate stress if misapplied.
Extinction
Withholding reinforcement for a previously reinforced behavior until that behavior decreases. Expect a temporary 'extinction burst' — a spike in the behavior — before it fades.
Shaping
Reinforcing successive small steps toward a final goal behavior, rather than waiting for the complete behavior to appear. Each step must be reinforced before raising the criteria.
Capturing
Marking and rewarding a behavior the animal performs spontaneously, without prompting. It requires observation and good timing but produces naturally offered, confident behaviors.
Luring
Using a food treat or object to physically guide a pet into a position or through a movement. The lure should be faded quickly after the behavior is learned.
Stimulus Control
A behavior is under stimulus control when it occurs reliably on cue and not at other times. Solid stimulus control means a cue reliably predicts the behavior — and the absence of the cue predicts it won't happen.
Variable Ratio Schedule
A reinforcement schedule in which rewards are delivered unpredictably after a varying number of correct responses. This schedule produces highly persistent behavior once a skill is well established.
Reinforcement Schedules
Once a pet understands a behavior, the schedule on which you deliver rewards has a measurable impact on how reliably that behavior holds up. A continuous reinforcement schedule — rewarding every correct response — works well when first teaching a new behavior. Once the behavior is established, shifting to a variable ratio schedule (rewarding unpredictably, after an average number of responses) tends to produce the most persistent behavior. Antecedents and Consequences
Every behavior occurs within an ABC sequence: Antecedent → Behavior → Consequence. The antecedent is anything that sets the occasion for a behavior (a cue, an environment, a person entering the room). The consequence is what follows. Trainers who focus only on consequences often miss opportunities to prevent unwanted behavior by managing antecedents instead.

Teaching Methods: Luring, Shaping, and Capturing
Trainers use several distinct techniques to get a behavior to happen so it can be reinforced. Each suits different situations.
- Luring: Using a treat or target held in the hand to physically guide the pet into position. Useful for quickly demonstrating a new behavior, but lures should be faded promptly so the pet doesn't become dependent on seeing the food before responding.
- Shaping: Reinforcing successive approximations — small steps that move progressively toward the final behavior. If teaching a dog to roll over, you might first reward lying down, then reward shifting weight, then reward partial rolls. Shaping requires patience but builds robust, clearly understood behaviors.
- Capturing: Waiting for the pet to offer the desired behavior naturally, then immediately marking and rewarding it. Sitting, yawning, and stretching are commonly captured. This method produces behaviors the animal initiates confidently because they were never forced.
- Targeting: Teaching the pet to touch a specific object (often a hand or a stick) with their nose or paw. Targeting is highly versatile — it can guide movement, position, and even complex tricks without physical prompting.
Timing Is the Most Critical Skill
Regardless of which technique you use, the reward or marker (such as a clicker or verbal 'yes') must arrive within roughly one to two seconds of the desired behavior. Delayed consequences are less clearly connected to the behavior in the animal's mind, which slows learning. Practicing your timing without the pet — clicking a pen in response to a video, for example — is a worthwhile exercise before your next training session.
